Movie Research : Life As We Know It

( Life As We Know It: rom-com )

The only things Holly Berenson (Katherine Heigl) and Eric Messer (Josh Duhamel) have in common after a disastrous first date are their hatred of each other and their love for their goddaughter, Sophie. Holly and Eric are forced to set aside their disputes and learn to cooperate for the benefit of the child when they are unintentionally appointed as her caregivers. Living together under one roof, Holly and Eric try to find a middle ground between their conflicting social and professional obligations.

What elements (Conventions) of the genre that you chose to base your final task on does this movie have?

In this movie and the movie we're planning to make, the main characters most likely have different backgrounds and personalities that unintentionally contribute to the romantic dynamic. They are both brought together randomly by circumstances, leading to unexpected connections. Over time, the character's intentions undergo personal growth and change, leading to a deeper connection.

What elements (Conventions) of the genre did the movie have that you like?

I enjoyed this movie because of the opposite attraction. This movie explores the dynamic between two characters with opposite personalities, creating a humorous and engaging relationship. The humor in this movie successfully blends humor with the romantic elements, using comedic situations to entertain the viewers. The unexpected plot changes add to the movie well, showing the challenges the couple has to face, in evolving their relationship.

What elements (Conventions) of the genre did the movie have that did not appeal to you?

I personally really enjoyed this movie but many others have their own opinions that explain what they didn't like as much. For example, many people didn't like how stereotypical the characters were. if the characters lack depth or are too stereotypical, it could lead to a disconnect from the viewers or could lead to a sense of predictability. The romance genre alone is very predictable since it often follows a set formula making it more cliche.
